It is not clear at this stage who will replace National Freedom Party leader Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi in the National Assembly after her resignation.
The African National Congress in Parliament has confirmed that it will announce the new chairpersons of its portfolio committees in the National Assembly next week. Media reports claimed that the official announcement was delayed due to internal squabbles within the party.
The ANC is still in the process of finalising the names of its members to fill vacancies in the National Assembly left by amongst others, former speaker Baleka Mbete.
African National Congress (ANC) MP Thandi Modise has been elected as Speaker of the National Assembly. Thandi Modise overcame the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) Richard Majola by 250 votes, whilst Majola only got 83 votes.
The ANC has announced that Nomvula Mokonyane will be redeployed to its head office at Luthuli House in Johannesburg. She has requested that her name be withdrawn from the list of those being sworn in as Members of Parliament (MP) earlier today.
