President Cyril Ramaphosa says indications are that Democratic Republic of Congo(DRC) President Joseph Kabila will not be contesting the upcoming December elections in that country.
Last month DRC Prime Minister Bruno Tshibala told the International Economic Forum of the Americas conference in Montreal, Canada, that President Kabila will not seek a third term as constitutional term limits prevent him from running again.
Kabila whose term ended in December 2016 has been postponing elections saying there is no budget – but has not publicly confirmed this.
President Ramaphosa told SABC news on his return from the AU summit in Mauritania that he is confident free and fair elections will happen in the DRC
“The indications that we have got are that he is not going to be vying for the elections. So other candidates have to register, and have to go out and start campaigning.”
“I am confident an election will take place. Let’s give the DRC a chance to engulf in this democratic process. Indications are that these elections will be free and fair,” adds Ramaphosa.
