DRC elections to take place in December

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Congolese government says elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo will take place in December as planned.

Elections in the DRC have been pushed back on countless occasions due to an alleged lack of resources. Critics say Joseph Kabila is determined to hang onto power and is attempting to rig the process.

Meanwhile, the Kingdom of Lesotho says it appreciates South Africa’s role in that country.

This is despite concerns from within the country that Pretoria is not an honest broker.

It’s been reported that some within Lesotho have influenced a few countries in the region to ask South Africa to recuse itself as facilitator.

President Cyril Ramaphosa, who was SADC facilitator in Lesotho, has now appointed retired Deputy Chief Justice Dikgang Moseneke as his envoy to Lesotho.

But there’s speculation that some countries in the region are pushing for South Africa’s removal. The Lesotho government says it isn’t aware of that.

SADC leaders are meeting in Luanda to find solutions to the pockets of insecurity in the region.

While there’s an acknowledgement that it’s stable, the DRC and Lesotho continue to be a concern.

The DRC is another region’s bugbear. The country is due to hold elections in December.

But there are fears elections won’t take place as they’ve been postponed several times.

Another concern is whether incumbent Joseph Kabila will be willing to relinquish power.

South Africa, which is heavily involved in peace keeping missions in these two countries, says it’s satisfied with the work done to stabilise the region.
