SASSA recipients protest closure of cash payment points

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A group of elderly recipients of the social security agency SASSA grants in Limpopo is demanding that the agency and the Post Bank rescind their decision to close cash payment points from April this year.

They marched to the offices of the Social Development Department in Polokwane yesterday. The withdrawal of social grants at Post Offices will also phased out.

The announcement was made in December last year.

Concern over SASSA pay point closures:

Limpopo Pay Point Hawkers Organisation spokesperson Noko Motibane highlighted the impact on small businesses serving elderly individuals.

Motibane says, “What they are doing now will benefit those who are already rich in towns.”

Tshifhiwa Dali, an official from the Social Development Department, accepted the memorandum  from the marchers.

“The grant’s beneficiaries have given the Department of Social Development and SASSA 21 working days to respond to their memorandum of demands. They have threatened not to vote if their demands are not met.”
