President Cyril Ramaphosa says SAPS members make the ultimate sacrifice to protect people in this country with their lives.
President Ramaphosa has been paying tribute to police officers that have lost their lives in the line of duty, during the annual commemoration ceremony at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
The President has called on all South Africans to join in the fight against crime, saying the men and women in blue can’t do it alone. He says police officers cannot continue to die at the hands of criminals.
He has called on police officers to honour their departed colleagues by remaining vigilant and ensuring that no police officer dies at the hands of criminals.

Over 850 SAPS members have succumbed to COVID-19 related illnesses
Police Minister Bheki Cele says 852 members of the South African Police Service have succumbed to COVID-19 related complications.
This year’s event is honouring the men and women in blue who lost their lives in the line of duty between April last year and 31 March this year.

Recently, Cele asked members of the public to unite against those who murdered police officers. He was speaking during the funeral service of police officer Sharon Mogale in Kempton Park in Ekurhuleni.
Mogale was shot and killed while with another woman officer at a retail store in Tembisa last month.
The four suspects who attacked them also took their service pistols.
