Reading Time: < 1 minute

The town of Port St. Johns in the Eastern Cape has come to a standstill after heavily armed men allegedly invaded the town and fired shots towards taxi operators. Shoppers and community members are reportedly running for cover around the town. It is alleged that there are bodies, including people wearing security guard uniforms, that are seen lying on the street.

An eyewitness, who is on the ground and does not want to be named, says the situation is so bad that some people have started torching taxis.

“Already, some are dead and others are injured, while others have been arrested by the police. Here at Port St. Johns, the situation is uncontrollable. All the business shops are closed, the community and other people are running all over and some are throwing themselves into the river. Port St. Johns is a mess. We are looking for [Police Minister] Bheki Cele to come and resolve this mess. We want the army to come and help us. This massacre is happening here at Port St. Johns.”
