President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the convening of the first ever Women’s Economic Assembly later this week.
In his weekly letter to the nation, Ramaphosa explained that such a gathering is necessary to achieve the full participation of women in the economy.
He says bringing about meaningful equality between men and women is one of the principle aims of the Constitution and South Africa must act with renewed urgency to realise the full economic empowerment of the country’s women.
President Cyril Ramaphosa says the inaugural Women’s Economic Assembly will bring together delegates from government, civil society and the private sector to develop a common plan of action for advancing women’s economic empowerment.
He says it will consider how supply chains can be used to benefit women-owned businesses, address the policy impediments to women’s economic empowerment, and improve access to financing for women-owned businesses, especially rural enterprises.
