Gauteng police are still searching for suspects in yesterday’s shooting incident in which two people were killed, and three others wounded including the Johannesburg Council Chief Whip Sithembiso Zungu.

The incident happened at a Back-to-School campaign hosted by Rand Water at the Zakariyya Park community hall in Vlakfontein south of Johannesburg.

Police say the suspects entered the venue and started shooting before fleeing. The deceased are reported to be an executive of the water utility and his bodyguard. The wounded were taken to hospital.

Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi elaborates, “An unknown number of suspects entered the hall and started shooting before fleeing the scene with an unknown white vehicle. Two people were declared dead on the scene while three were taken to hospital with gun shot wounds. The motive of the shooting is unknown at this stage.”

In response to the incident, the African National Congress (ANC) in the greater Johannesburg Region has urged the public not to speculate and to avoid spreading fake news.

ANC greater Johannesburg spokesperson Masilo Serekele emphasised the need for residents to allow the police to conduct a thorough investigation.

Serekele said, “We don’t know the motive, and we don’t want to speculate and we want to urge the residents of Zakariyya park to also not speculate, and not distribute any fake news – and allow the police to investigate, and then from there we’ll be able to know what is the motive.”
