Police in Johannesburg have destroyed drugs with an estimated street value of R800 million. The drugs seized during the anti-crime operation include cocaine, mandrax tablets and heroin.
This is the third destruction since April. Most come from ports of entry.
National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says some of the drugs destroyed were linked to high-profile cases.
“Every year, this is what we do. 3–4 times a year. Once a case has been finalised we obtain a court order and get permission from the court to destroy these particular drugs. So some of the drugs getting destroyed today are linked to high-profile cases. One of those cases is the drug bust that happens every year in August in Alston, Cape Town. Police intercepted a truck transporting drugs worth R400 million.”
