The Patriotic Alliance (PA) says it will be the kingmaker in the key metros of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni. The party, which has captured several wards in Gauteng and the Western Cape, says its doors are open for negotiations on coalition arrangements with all parties, specifically the newly formed party, Action SA.

PA leader Gayton MacKenzie says the party does not mind supporting Herman Mashaba in becoming the mayor in Johannesburg.

“We have taken wards in Ekhuruleni, Thokoza. We have taken Eden Park, Reitger Park, Eldorado Park ward seats are still coming. We will be the real kingmakers in Ekuruleni.

“Herman Mashaba is lucky because I would consider him strongly about going into coalition with him, because he is very clear about his stance on foreigners. In fact, if you look at all the parties we are the closest to Action SA in terms of the coalition and we don’t have a problem to support him or him to support us. For him to support us in Ekhuruleni and we will support him in Joburg if he supports us in Ekhuruleni we will support him to the be mayor of Joburg.”

Kingmakers in Western Cape

Smaller parties are set to be kingmakers in most municipalities in the Western Cape, especially in the Garden Route and Karoo regions. This as the province has a total of 15 hung councils – which means coalitions will have to be formed to determine the ruling parties.

These include Beaufort West, Laingsburg and Prince Albert in the Central Karoo, Oudtshoorn and Kannaland in the Little Karoo, and Bitou, Knysna and George on the Garden Route.

The PA’s National Chairperson, Marlon Daniels says they will remove coalitions that do not benefit the people.

“I know there are these statements and sentiments going around about us, sometimes jumping into bed with other parties in terms of coalitions as we’ve done in NMB and then changing coalitions a few months later. We’ll continue with that trend, because it’s not about us, it’s about the community. We know politics is like horse-trading, so those who go into coalition with us, rest assured, if you cannot deliver where our people will be beneficiaries of such horse-trading, then we’re going to remove you.”
