The incident happened around midnight on Friday.

One person has died and hundreds others have been left without shelter after a fire tore through the Denver informal settlement in Johannesburg on Saturday night, destroying more than 100 shacks.

The City of Joburg’s Emergency Management Services spokesperson Nana Radebe says a list of everyone affected is being compiled so they can be assisted.

“When we got on scene there were flames everywhere. We started with firefighting where we had to also pull in other fire engines. Four fire engines were on scene. Unfortunately one person was found dead. It is alleged that a candle was left unattended.”
