SA can work to shape a common future: Ramaphosa

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Cyril Ramaphosa says although South Africa cannot change its divided past, its people can work to shape a common future. He was addressing the Afrikanerbond centenary celebrations in Paarl, Western Cape.

The Broederbond was in the past dedicated to the advancement of Afrikaner interests. In 1993, it became an open organisation, and in 1994 became the Afrikanerbond.

It now acts in the interest of Afrikaners who are committed to building a successful South Africa.

Ramaphosa says this year commemorates a number of key historical events that shape the future of the country.

“The fact that we mark the centenary of the Afrikanerbond in the same year as we celebrate the centenary of the births of Mandela and Sisulu is important not only in understanding our past. It is just as important in understanding our future and this time to do it together. We owe it to the memory of Mandela to forge a new nation that is united in its diversity. We owe it to our children to forge a nation in which all may have security and where all may enjoy an improving quality of life.”
