An alarming number of JMPD officers have been killed in recent months.

The City of Johannesburg plans to set up an event to commemorate Metro Police officers and emergency services personnel who’ve lost their lives in the line of duty.

This comes after the killing of a senior Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer, Ayanda Sithole earlier this week.

She was shot and killed while driving out of her Palm Springs home in the south of Johannesburg.

The City’s Public Safety Member of the Mayoral Committee , Michael Sun, says the deaths of civil servants is not only a loss to their families, but the nation as a whole.

“They have lost the family member, but we’ve all lost somebody. We lost a colleague, a protector to the city and the nation. We certainly at the City of Johannesburg want to have our own event where we receive the families of our fallen not just JMPD, Emergency Management Services (EMS) and other public safety officials across the city,” says Sun.
