Four people have been arrested by Cape Town law enforcement on allegations of ATM scamming and targeting a German tourist.

The city says the suspects were identified by street camera operators trying to make the tourist swipe his bank card. The suspects apparently said tourists needed to pay to walk on the streets of the city.

Mayoral Committee Member for Safety JP Smith says the officers cornered the suspects who were trying to flee in a hired car.

“Law enforcement continued to chase, eventually arresting all four suspects, a female and four males. Inside the car, they found fake number plates, several card readers and scamming devices, security clothing, fake security IDs, and several ATM cards.”

“Our counterparts in the banking sector based in Johannesburg were alerted in order to render assistance to the investigating officer of the SAPS and the NPA so that they face the full extent of the law,” adds Smith.
