Muslims across South Africa celebrate the Eid ul Fitr

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Muslims across South Africa are celebrating Eid ul Fitr on Thursday, signifying the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The day is observed with early morning prayers, acts of charity such as feeding the needy, and visiting family members as well as the graves of loved ones.

In Cape Town, prayers and a sermon will be held at the Gatesville Mosque in Athlone. The theme of the event is ‘Celebration and commemoration in solidarity with the Palestinian people’.

This solidarity comes in light of the ongoing bombing and unfolding humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The normally festive end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan has been overshadowed this year by the war in Gaza. Talks between Israel and Hamas to secure a ceasefire and release of hostages have stalled. And aid agencies have renewed their appeal to Israel to allow more humanitarian aid on the ground.
