The bail application of five accused in the Fort Hare University murder case is set to continue in the Dimbaza Magistrate’s Court in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday.

The accused are facing murder, attempted murder and illegal possession of firearm charges.

They are linked to the murder of the Fort Hare Vice Chancellor’s bodyguard, Mboneli Vesele and the university’s Fleet Manager, Petrus Roets.

The bail application of the university’s suspended chief transport officer, Bongani Peter, was heard first last week.

The state told the court that Peter’s cellphone number was found in the abandoned vehicle that was driven by the hitmen that killed Vesele.

State prosecutor, Nceba Ntelwa, said during the proceedings there was an alleged hit list of 13 people including the name of the VC, Prof Sakhele Buhlungu, and the murdered Vesele and Roets.

Peter testified that he will not interfere with witnesses if released on bail and he can afford between R500 and R1000.

The five accused appeared in court last week and proceedings were postponed.
