Eskom dismisses allegations of list to switch off electricity for Soweto communities

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Eskom has dismissed allegations of a list of those who will have their electricity switched off in certain parts of Soweto in Gauteng.

Soweto residents recently embarked on a violent protest calling on Eskom to restore power in their areas.

The power supplier disconnected electricity from non-paying residents and those with illegal connections.

Eskom spokesperson in Gauteng, Amanda Qithi, says there is no list to switch off electricity for communities.

“Eskom has been made aware that there is misinformation circulating pertaining to an alleged list to switch off electricity in certain parts of Soweto. Eskom would like to confirm that there is no list to switch off electricity for communities, furthermore requests that those communicating such allegations to refrain from doing so as they are misleading the residents of Soweto with incorrect information. However, Eskom does conduct system and network audits to look after its infrastructure to prevent widespread damage, prolonged outages and to protect the lives of innocent people in all its areas of supply across Gauteng.”
