The African National Congress (ANC) Veterans League President, Snuki Zikalala, says the league has not formally pronounced the ANC leadership positions for the coming national conference, yet.

Zikalala says they will only do so, once the ANC has officially opened contestation for the party leadership.

He was speaking to SABC News on the sidelines of the North West provincial elective conference of the ANC Veterans’ League in Rustenburg.

Already some ANC leaders in provinces have openly pronounced their preferred presidential candidates.

An elective conference of the ANC Veterans League was attended by about 150 delegates from across the province. They sang songs calling for unity within the ruling party.

The league expressed satisfaction at the leadership of the incumbent ANC president. Zikalala, elaborates:

“We as veterans, are happy with his performance. He’s very consistent. So far we have never had any problem with him being involved in corrupt activities, and he has made sure that he appoints a judge like Judge (Raymond) Zondo. We are happy, we commend that. We support that and so, we are happy with what he has been doing. We do meet with him as veterans from time to time. He listens to us; he does not have an antagonistic relationship with us as veterans.”

The veterans league in the province has also called on members who want to be in leadership positions to lead by example. The league’s executive member Bushy Maape.

“This is fundamental, that you lead by example, you do the right things. There’s no point in preaching to people, as to how they should behave, whilst you are doing the opposite. So you should lead by example. But one other fundamental point is that you should not be embroiled in controversy. so stay clear of controversy, malfeasances, corruption, and such things.”

Meanwhile, the newly elected provincial leadership says should its member, Bushy Maape, be nominated by branches to become the provincial chairperson of the ANC, he will be highly supported. The league’s provincial secretary, Martin Sebakwane, explains:

“If branches support it, we’ve got no option but to go with the flow of the branches. We don’t have a stated position at the moment. We will come to that point later. If we are persuaded, we will agree, if not, we will see how it all goes.”

Members of the ANC Veterans’ League have been urged to establish branches.
