The African National Congress (ANC) has condemned a Facebook post by Dihlabeng executive mayor Lindiwe Makhalema in which she called President Cyril Ramaphosa a sell-out.

The ANC says the mayor’s conduct violates the party’s social media policy.

The ANC’s social media policy prescribes that any social media posting by members must be legal, ethical and respectful.

The ANC has condemned the insults directed to its president Cyril Ramaphosa by one of its members in the social media platform. The party says it is possible to express viewpoints without resorting to personal attacks and insults.

This is after mayor of Dihlabeng municipality Lindiwe Makhalema called President Cyril Ramaphosa a “sell-out”. Free State ANC spokesperson Thabo Meeko says the party will take harsh action against Makhalema for using inflammatory language.

“We are going to deal harshly with anything that stand on the way of the ANC to unite its membership and to unite the people of the Free State. So the issue will be investigated further. But I can confirm that indeed the leadership is going to be very harsh and decisive, so that we send a message that we are serious about the project of uniting the African National Congress.”

Meanwhile, the SACP in the Free State is up in arms over Makhalema’s controversial Facebook post. The party’s Free State second deputy secretary Mojalefa Simango says Makhalema’s conduct undermines the process of uniting the ANC and its alliance partners.

“We would expect that ANC to take steps against this comrade particularly within the ambit of its constitution, because her action undermines the process of the ANC to unite the alliance. But remember when you attack the president of the ANC you attack the alliance.”

In condemning this, the ANC says the recent upsurge in insults towards leadership particularly the president is extremely disturbing and the party views them in a serious light. Makhalema could not be reached for comment.
