An election date will be announced soon: Ramaphosa

Reading Time: 2 minutes

President Cyril Ramaphosa has assured South Africans that he will soon announce the election date.

Parties that will contest this year’s national and provincial elections have urged Ramaphosa to use his State of the Nation Address next month to announce the date.

Over 360 political parties have shown interest in contesting the elections.

Earlier this year, the President said he was consulting the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on the elections which must be held within 90 days.

The country is gearing up for what many believe will be hotly contested elections since the dawn of democracy.

“Well, the election date will be announced shortly so that South Africans should get ready for the election. This is an election year; we are bringing an end to the sixth administration and once the people of our country have decided who they would like to take their country forward in the form of a new government we enter into the seventh administration, so the election date is going to be announced soon. Does soon mean the SONA? No, the election date is going to be announced soon.”

Final voter registration

Meanwhile, the final voter registration has been set for this weekend, the 3rd and 4th of February.

Government has since urged all eligible voters to register for the upcoming provincial and national elections.

The IEC says it wants to ensure optimum numbers of eligible South Africans register to vote and has further committed to deliver a better registration weekend as opposed to the last one held in November last year.
