South Africa remembers Billy Modise

Family and friends of ANC stalwart Billy Modise will on Tuesday gather at the Department of International Relations offices in Pretoria for a memorial service.

Modise passed away in hospital last week at the age of 87 following a long illness.

Modise was a retired Chief of State Protocol and a recipient of the National Order of Luthuli. He has served as Ambassador to Sweden and later Canada.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has declared a Special Official Funeral Category One for Modise.

Minister in the Presidency Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, who also chairs the inter-Ministerial Committee on Modise’s funeral arrangements, elaborates, “All protocol relating to Category One official funeral are being followed. The flags of the country are currently flying half must in all government buildings and members of the defence force will honour him with a ceremonial procession.

“He will be remembered as a committed activist, humanist, diplomat and an international servant who distinguished himself in the service of his people.  And we thank South Africans and the international community for their support and messaged of comfort to his family and friends.”
