Reading Time: 2 minutes

Stellenbosch University’s School of Public Leadership’s Professor Zwelinzima Ndevu says the Constitutional Court judgment against former President Jacob Zuma has profound legal, constitutional as well as political implications.

On Tuesday, the court sentenced Zuma to 15 months in jail for contempt of court.

The country’s apex court had directed Zuma to appear before the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture but he ignored the directive.

Ndevu says some cabinet members should engage Zuma to encourage him to accept his sentence.

ANC studying Zuma judgment

On Tuesday, the African National Congress (ANC) says it has noted the Constitutional Court’s judgment against Jacob Zuma, sentencing the former President to 15 months in jail.

In a statement, the party says it is studying the judgment.

“Without a doubt, this is a difficult period in the movement and we call upon our members to remain calm. The meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) scheduled to take place this weekend, will reflect on the implications and consequences of the judgment. We further reaffirm our commitment to upholding the rule of law and fulfilling the aspirations of our constitutional democracy.”

ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe elaborates on the party’s stance on the matter:
