Zama Zamas arrested in Sekhukhune

Four suspected illegal miners have been arrested at an old mining shaft at Atok in Sekhukhune, Limpopo.

Police spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba says police found a group of people mining illegally.

He says they confiscated eight generators, eleven jackhammers and one water pump.

Ledwaba says the suspects will appear in the Sekhukhune Magistrate’s Court soon.

“It is alleged that police arrived at old mining shaft and found a group of people at Atok illegally mining. The suspects dispersed in different directions and as a result four suspects were arrested for illegal mining and police confiscated the mining equipment.”

The South Africa government has been facing challenges against illegal miners.

Early this month  it was reported that police operations in Riverlea, South of Johannesburg had so far resulted in the arrest of 79 suspected illegal miners.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Brenda Muridili said 69 of the suspects are undocumented persons.

This follows the deployment of the police’s Special Task Force, after the death of five illegal miners near the Zamimpilo informal settlement.
