The Student Representative Council (SRC) President of the University of the Free State’s Qwaqwa Campus, Sifiso Mofokeng, says they have moved the students who were affected by the shooting incident to safe places.

Three students died following a shooting incident at an off-campus student residence in Botjhabela village, in Phuthaditjhaba.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning when three gunmen entered their residence and demanded laptops and cellphones.

Two of the deceased students are from UFS Qwaqwa Campus while another student was enrolled at the Maluti TVET College.

Mofokeng says the university management needs to beef up security inside and outside campus for the safety of students.

“We do have the private security company, but there is not much effort to ensure that the company serves the students to the maximum point,” says Mofokeng.

Meanwhile, Maluti TVET College SRC President in Qwaqwa, Jeremiah Mokoena, has also expressed concern over the safety of students staying in off-campus residences.

“I feel that the incident that happened is a very painful one, especially for the family and institution as a whole. We need to have  a more in-depth look into the safety of students. So, I believe with further discussions with the management, we will find greater resolution in mitigating the issues.”
