The  Student Representative Council (SRC) at the University of the Free State’s Qwaqwa campus has expressed shock and anger over the attack of students. Two students were shot and killed and another two seriously wounded at the university’s off-campus students’ residences at Botjhabela village near Phuthaditjhaba on Wednesday.

The incident happened when three unknown gunmen entered the students’ residence and demanded laptops and cell phones.

The deceased are students at the university and the Maluti TVET College in Qwaqwa.

The university’s SRC president, Sifiso Mshengu, has called for immediate police action.

“We are of the view that the police and everyone must come together, civil society and we are still going to take action to ensure that this is addressed properly and that justice is brought to these students and their families. We are going to ensure that there is sufficient support for the students that are currently in hospital and those that are in ICU (Intensive Care Unit). And we are stressed by the university that it is not budging in terms of support,” says Mshengu.
