Three people were killed and five other people were seriously injured when a structure collapsed on Chamberlin Road near Manchester Road in Jacobs on Wednesday, KwaZulu-Natal paramedics said.

Rescue Care Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said paramedics arrived on the scene at around 12.30pm to find a large part of a structure had collapsed onto workers and onto the roadside squashing a truck.

“A quick triage was established and five men had sustained serious injuries and were stabilised on the scene by Advanced Life Support Paramedics before being transported to nearby hospitals for the further care that they required,” Jamieson said.

“Three men were trapped under the concrete and the Durban Fire Department and [the South African Police Services] SAPS Search and Rescue worked into the late afternoon to free the men. Unfortunately all three men passed away due to the severity of their injuries.”

Jamieson said that the cause of the collapse was not known and said that the police were on the scene to investigate.
