The time has come to remove the ANC govt: DA Chief Whip

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Democratic Alliance (DA) Chief Whip Siviwe Gwarube has told delegates at the party’s Federal Congress that the time has come to remove the ANC government from the Union Buildings.

The official opposition is currently holding its national congress at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

Gwarube says under the current government, the cost of living has risen to unprecedented levels, while the country’s unemployment rate continues to be high.

She adds that the current government cannot be trusted as they continue to steal public money.

“How can you trust people who have stolen the money from the funeral of former President Nelson Mandela. Understand this government, the cost of living has risen to unprecedented levels, people are dying of starvation. We demand that government slashes the fuel levy and extend the list of zero vat rates goods,” she adds.

She has accused the government of being ‘out of touch’ with the reality of its citizens.

“Ministers get free petrol, free electricity while people are struggling,” she adds.

About 2000 delegates are expected to attend the federal congress.

The party will elect new leadership and pronounce on new policy proposals.

Meanwhile, party leader, John Steenhuisen and former Johannesburg Mayor, Dr Mpho Phalatse are contesting for the party’s leadership position.

Reliable services

DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga has urged delegates to forget about the promises that were made by the ‘Phala Phala’ train, saying the current government only makes empty promises.

He says under President Cyril Ramaphosa, public transport has collapsed.

“Trains and bus services have collapsed under the ANC government. But under the DA government, people will have moving and reliable trains.”

Msimanga further told delegates that once the DA takes over government, the security cluster will be functional again.
