Pictures of what is believed to be Atul Gupta’s South Africa passport are doing the rounds on social media.

On Tuesday, the Department of Home Affairs refused to confirm whether Gupta had a South African passport. The Department was only willing to discuss Gupta‘s status as a permanent resident of South Africa.

Department of Home Affairs spokesperson, Mayihlome Tshwete reacted to a letter that Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba had signed in May 2015, granting Gupta early naturalisation.

“This is the same letter that was supposedly leaked last year, and during the engagement with the Parliamentary Committee the Minister explained the process of acquiring naturalisation. When you are about the tail end of that process, you are granted citizenship on the grounds that you are going to denounce your citizenship. There was an expectation that he would denounce his Indian citizenship but he chose not to do that, therefore he was not granted the citizenship,” explains Tshwete.
