Support for a party should determine if they can be part of a coalition: Ramaphosa

Reading Time: < 1 minute

President Cyril Ramaphosa says there is a need for a threshold that all political parties must meet before being allowed to participate in coalition governments, to avoid instability.

This as the debate on coalitions continues, ahead of the 2024 general elections.

Ramaphosa was speaking during a media briefing at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, after hosting his counterpart, President of Finland Sauli Väinämö Niinistö.

He says South Africa has a lot to learn from Finland, because that country has always ruled through coalitions, both at a national and local level. Ramaphosa says, although at local government levels, coalitions have seen a great deal of instability, other approaches could be looked at.

“That is why we’re now thinking of having a threshold, if you have a particular threshold where your support level goes beyond that – then you can be part of that coalition government. So that there is no instability, because in the end it is the service that we provide to our people that should come first, rather than the spoils of governance.”
