Six people killed in Saturday’s flash floods in the Eastern Cape

Six people have now died in Saturday’s flash floods in the Buffalo City Metro in the Eastern Cape. The deceased include a member of the police diving team.

Hundreds of homes were severely damaged leaving scores of families displaced.

Premier Oscar Mabuyane is visiting the area where cleanup operations are under way.

The Metro has deployed disaster management services to affected areas.

The Premier’s spokesperson Khuselwa Rantjie says Mabuyane has sent his condolences to the families.

“Premier Oscar Mabuyane has conveyed his condolences to the families who lost their loved ones following yesterday’s [Saturday’s] torrential rains. A total of 6 people have died in separate incidents including a member of the South African Police Services. The Premier is really saddened by the loss of life and livelihoods. He has called on communities to remain on high alert as well as encourage businesses and NGOs to support families that are in need.”
