Justice Minister Michael Masutha says he expects the reviewing of a law regarding the time limit of reporting sexual offences to be completed in less than the 24 months recommended by the Constitutional Court.
The Court on Thursday upheld a High Court ruling that the act is inconsistent with the Constitution.
Until now, the law did not allow victims of sexual abuse to press criminal charges 20 years or more after the offence.
The ruling comes after eight women approached the court to reverse the law.
They accused late philanthropist Sidney Frankel of sexually abusing them when they were children over 20 years ago.
“It might actually not even be necessary for us to introduce a new bill. We might need to rerun a public consultation process… Parliament may have to rerun that process… Another option may be that we agree with Parliament to introduce a Committee bill that substitutes the Executive bill before Parliament. That might just make things shorter so that long before the 24 months we have something in place.”
