Service delivery protests to blame for poor matric results: SADTU

Teachers Union South African Democratic Teachers’ Union in the North West says the provincial department did not do much to provide rural and township schools with resources hence the decline of the 2017 matric results.

However, they also acknowledge that the decline is as a result of school disruptions due to service delivery protests.

The province has retained its fourth position nationally, achieving a 79.4% pass rate.

This is a decline of 3.1 percentage points compared to the 2016 pass rate.

“We have also observed that 2017 there has seen some disruptions in other communities which might have been a particular factor relating to the pass percentage. We think we must then intensify the programme. We are aware that there is a lot of effort the department is taking, but we think there is a lot that needs to be done in terms of making sure that there are resources especially in our rural and township schools which will then assist those particular schools,” says Provincial Secretary for SADTU, Els Themba.
