Parliament has confirmed that National Assembly Speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has until next week to give written reasons to the Powers and Privileges Committee, as to why she allegedly unilaterally increased the salary of the Secretary to Parliament, Xolile George.

The Powers and Privileges Committee is awaiting Mapisa-Nqakula’s written representation before it considers whether to institute an inquiry into her conduct.

This follows a complaint by the DA against the Speaker that charged that she had violated the code of conduct and ethics for members by improperly hiking George’s salary and allegedly being economical with the truth about it.

George was appointed on a R2. 6 million annual salary in line with the job advertisement. However, his salary has reportedly been increased to R4. 4 million. George was appointed in June 2022 and the salary adjustment reportedly happened months later.

If Mapisa-Nqakula’s written representation to the committee is not satisfactory, she may be called to give oral evidence.
