SAPS had 28 741 confirmed COVID-19 cases by the end of March 2021: Report

The COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the human and financial resources of the South African Police Services (SAPS).

This is reflected in the SAPS annual report for the 2020/2021 financial year which has been tabled to Parliament.

The police services had 28 741 confirmed COVID-19 cases by the end of March this year.

This accounted for 1,86% of the total cases that were recorded nationally at 1.5 million (1 548 157) at the time.

5 954 confirmed cases were recorded at the police Head Office and National Divisions. The Western Cape had the highest number COVID-19 cases at 4 695 followed by Gauteng at 4 488 in the 2020/2021 financial year.

598 members in the police services died of COVID-19 between April last year and the end of March this year.

Most fatalities were recorded in the Eastern Cape at 116, KwaZulu-Natal at 96, Gauteng 79 and the Western Cape had 75 fatalities. 99 fatalities were recorded at Head Office and National Divisions.
