SAPS cautions youth against criminal syndicates

Reading Time: 2 minutes

National Police Commissioner General Khehla Sitole has warned members of the public against criminal syndicates using money to lure young people into a life of crime.

Sitole was addressing hundreds of youth gathered in Pretoria for the launch of the National Youth Crime summit.

This is the first police anti-crime summit aimed particularly at the youth.

Young people are said to be both victims and offenders of various crimes. The national commissioner says criminal syndicates are investing in youth.

Sitole, National Police Commissioner says: “All the criminal syndicates are successful because of young people. The criminals will not take an old man into a heist, because he can’t run away. So they take the middle aged very energetic young people. If you take them out you collapse that operation, immediately.”

Bongani Mkongi, Deputy Minister of Police says: “This generation of the police that is old should groom the young ones and make sure that they join the police.

We have a number of careers at the police other than being a foot soldier.”

The  young people in attendance say they are  hoping the summit will  provide some tangible solutions to crimes facing the youth.
