SANDF team to evacuate over 40 South Africans in Sudan

The team that is to evacuate over 40 South African citizens are expected to arrive in Sudan on Sunday. This after, the Sudan army declared a 48-hour truce in celebration of EID.

The fiercest battles between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been in and around the capital Khartoum. The two previously allied forces have been engaged in a violent power struggle over the past seven days.

This has presented a slim opportunity for countries, including South Africa to evacuate their citizens.

More than 40 South African ex-pats are stuck in Sudan waiting to be evacuated.

It has been days of uncertainty while the two sides agreed to truce and ceasefire, fighting continued particularly in the capital Khartoum.

Many countries including the United States of America have already evacuated their staff from embassies. The US embassy is currently closed after the whole staff and the ambassador were evacuated.

SABC has reliably learnt that a team from the defence force is on its way to Sudan where operation to evacuate South Africans is expected to commence on Sunday.
