SANBS urges people to donate blood as festive season approaches

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) says it has less than three days of stock for the ‘O’ blood type.

The SANBS says it needs five days of stock to meet the country’s needs. KwaZulu-Natal SANBS head of donor relations, Phumzile Zulu, has appealed to all potential and existing blood donors that are due to donate, to visit SANBS blood donation sites.

Zulu says donors can also visit mobile blood drives at shopping centers to donate blood.

“Approaching the festive season. It is important that our loyal donors come through in numbers and make their donations. With us approaching the festive season, we have a lot of accidents that take place over this season and with that, a lot of people will need blood.”

“So what does three-day stock means, it means we only have enough blood to cover three days. So if there is an accident daily for four days, we won’t be able to continue saving lives,” adds Zulu.
