The South African Football Coaches Association (SAFCA) has congratulated Mamelodi Sundowns on winning the inaugural DStv Premiership title.

The Brazilians beat their Tshwane rivals SuperSport United 3-0 in the Tshwane derby, at Loftus Versfeld on Wednesday night.

Goals from midfielders Lebohang Maboe, Aubrey Modiba and Themba Zwane were enough to secure a win for the DStv Premiership log leaders.

SAFCA has commended Sundowns’ technical team led by co-head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, senior coach Steve Komphela and co-head coach Rhulani Mokwena .

“Once again, they have shown that playing to the strengths of your players is the basis for building a successful team and testimony to that is the four years they have dominated the League with a style of play that appreciates the special traits of the local talent and is very close to the South African philosophy,” reads the statement.

Sundowns is the first club to win four consecutive League titles in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) era.

SuperSport suffered a major blow when Matsatsantsa’s Guily Manziba picked up a straight red card following a dangerous tackle on Sphelele Mkhulise.

SAFCA says it hopes other PSL teams will be encouraged to give more local coaches a chance.

“Even more encouraging is to see Sundowns achieving all this with local coaches. We hope this a message to both local clubs and local coaches. We hope local clubs are encouraged to give more local coaches a chance a build their teams with the principles of maximising local talent,” says SAFCA.
