African National Congress (ANC) head of elections, Fikile Mbalula, says South Africans should continue to build on the gains that have been registered by the party over the last 25 years. Mbalula was on an election campaign trail in his hometown of Botshabelo in the Free State. With only a few days ahead of elections, political parties are leaving nothing to chance. The ANC is targeting the sprawling township of Botshabelo.
Botshabelo, a place of refuge, is synonymous with various struggles, but unemployment remains high. There are many industrial companies here, but most remain closed.
Some residents have lost hope in the ruling party.
“From now on, I’m not going to vote for ANC because I’m struggling to get a job and struggling to find an opportunity to study and further my education. I even struggle to get a simple thing which is job,” says a resident.
However, some residents believe that President Cyril Ramaphosa will make changes.
“I’m going to vote because I’ve been unemployed for 10 years. So now I want some development in my life. I want some changes in my life; I’m sure Ramaphosa will make changes because it’s long time I’m not working,” says another resident.

The ANC says it’s got the interests of the masses at heart and they will do their best to unlock economic opportunities in the area. Mbalula says that the ANC registered a victory in the incorporation of Botshabelo into Qwa-Qwa.
“We fought here the incorporation of Botshabelo into Qwa-Qwa and we won those struggles. So economic revitalisation is very important in these particular areas and opening up those hubs so that people can get to be employed and do things for themselves.”
Mbalula will be campaigning in Bloemfontein on Sunday.
