Parliament spokesperson Moloto Mothapo says it is bizarre that a legal firm would want to stop the proceedings of Parliament after a group called New Nation Movement through its lawyers, wrote a letter to Parliament threatening legal action against the election of former Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula as Speaker.

The vacancy was created following a cabinet reshuffle two weeks ago. Mapisa-Nqakula was nominated by the ANC Caucus for this position. The movement says Mapisa-Nqakula is not fit for the position because of corruption allegations against her and that ANC Caucus members didn’t fully apply their minds to the nomination.

They demand that the election should not go ahead as planned tomorrow. Mothapo says the letter is yet to land in Parliament’s inbox.

“It would really be unheard of, baffling, beggar believe that a legal firm would demand a stop to the serious constitutional process of this magnitude without putting forward a single legal ground or substantiation for that. It would be really baffling. But be that as it may, I want to emphasise that the sitting tomorrow is going ahead,” says Mothapo.
