Government says they have paid-out over 3000 tourist guides through the Tourism Relief Fund. The fund was initiated amid the national state of disaster – to provide relief for those affected by the coronavirus lockdown in the tourism and hospitality sector.
Tourism Department Director-General Nkhumeleni Tharage says there are an additional 3000 tour guides who are going through verification by the UIF to get funding.
He was briefing the media on new regulations for the sector under level two of the lockdown.

Tourism Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi-Ngubane has encouraged South Africans to support local tourism sector as the ban on international travel remains in force.
“Thus far 3 106 tourist guides were paid and they will be paid for the next three months, there is another bunch of 3000 that is going through verification through the UIF. We just want to make sure there is no possibility of double-dipping. There are some tourist guides that we identified that were paid UIF. It means that there is a number of tourist guides that are employed out there and that was a really good observation from our side.”
