Police in the North West are still searching for three of the five detainees who escaped from police custody in Lichtenburg in North West, on Wednesday.

The five suspects Sifiso Vilakazi, Petrus Mosweu, Orapeleng Matlhape, Philani Mathonzi and Armando Mocumbi, were at the time of the escape facing several charges including rape, murder, the illegal possession of a firearm and robbery.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, “The police managed to arrest two of the escapees that are Petrus Mosweu and Orapeleg Matlhape shortly after the escape. A search for the three escapees is under way. Anyone who may have information that can assist in the investigation and the re-arrest of the escapees is requested to contact Lieutenant Colonel Makgwana Mokotedi on 082 416 1638.”

Meanwhile earlier today, Gauteng police launched a manhunt after six inmates escaped while on the way to court at Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni.

Police spokesperson, Brenda Muridili said the police truck transporting the prisoners was ambushed by three armed men driving a silver vehicle.

The incident occurred at the corner of Barry Marais and Rondebult streets.

Muridili says five of the six escapees were due at court for a Dawnpark case of business robbery, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm while the sixth escapee was due for his first appearance on a shoplifting case.

The accused include Zimbabwean nationals, Nkululeko Nkomo, Robert Hlatshwayo, Thulani Dube, Augustine Moyo and Mbongiseni Mkandla.
