N3 closed at Mooi River due to service delivery protest

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The N3 highway has been closed in Mooi River due to service delivery protests Monday morning.

Holiday-makers travelling from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng can expect major delays Monday morning on the N3 near Mooi River in the KwaZulu-Natal midlands following service delivery protests.

Provincial Road Traffic Inspectorate’s Zinhle Mngomezulu says protesters have set alight a petrol tanker which has caused a major disruption to traffic.

Mngomezulu says alternative routes have also been affected.

Trucks were set alight and used to block the highway. The protest has resulted in major delays as motorists try to make their way home from the Easter getaway to the coast.

Meanwhile, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi has called on motorists to drive cautiously as they return from various Easter Weekend destinations.

Buthelezi says drunk drivers must face the full might of the law.

Buthelezi was speaking to the SABC during a visit to the United Congregational Church of South Africa in Inanda north of Durban for an Easter service.

More than 20 people have been killed in KwaZulu Natal roads since the beginning of the Easter weekend.

“I think it’s grossly irresponsible for our people to embark alcohol when they have lives of people on their hands and I think that it’s very painful each time it is announced through the media that so many people have lost their lives so unnecessarily, it’s something that really makes all of us sad because these people are dying unnecessarily.”
