The alleged murder of 35-year-old Lonwabo Mbixane, who was fatally shot in New Brighton, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, in April 2023 is linked to insurance claims.

According to police spokesperson Priscilla Naidu, the insurance were taken out on the victim without his or his family’s knowledge.

The investigation into the incident was conducted by the Provincial Serious and Violent Crimes unit, leading to the arrest of the two suspects. They are currently in police custody.

Naidu revealed that the suspects Azola Bhuqa, 41, and Siphosethu Kaya, 22, made their court appearance on Monday, 24 July 2023, at the New Brighton Magistrate Court, where they were remanded in custody until 31 July 2023.

Authorities are actively probing potential connections between these suspects and other “hit” murders that occurred in the Nelson Mandela Bay area.
