The Executive Mayor of the James Moroka Local Municipality at Siyabuzwa in Mpumalanga, Rhoda Mathabe, says inadequate water supply to communities is due to aging water infrastructure.

Residents have been without clean water supply for weeks.

Most are relying on local boreholes and streams. Criminals have also been blamed for sabotaging municipal infrastructure. Mathabe says the municipality will look into allegations levelled by residents that it is deliberately failing to supply them with clean water.

“The issue of vandalism and theft and we need to state it that even in the communities there are elements of criminality. They come and steal and even put our security guards at risk. Some of them are beaten up because some of them want to take cables. And now because we are going for elections people want us to look like the municipality that does not deliver services,” Mathabe explains.
