Mthunzi Nkabinde, 41, who is accused of shooting and killing his in-laws in Bethal, Mpumalanga, appeared in court on Monday.

Nkabinde allegedly shot and killed his father-in-law, brother-in-law and sister-in-law in Kanana Section, Mzinoni Township, over the weekend. It is alleged that he first shot his wife, who is currently fighting for her life in hospital.

Nkabinde’s mother-in-law Duduzile Phakathi says the suspect has a reputation for harassing the family.

Phakathi says, “On Saturday afternoon he came and requested to talk to his wife. Shortly after that, we were told that he was assaulting her. My husband went out to meditate. My son-in-law then pulled out a firearm and shot my husband, my son and my daughter.”

Another family member, Fani Phakathi says this was not the first time the suspect assaulted and pointed a firearm at his wife.

Fani says, “I knew it was coming and I told everyone in the family. He is going to finish the whole family because it is his intention. He once pointed at his wife with a firearm. The state only warned him. The state failed us. I saw that it was coming.”

Nkabinde’s younger brother, Sibusiso Nkabinde has extended his family’s condolences to the Phakathis.

Sibusiso says, “We haven’t met him yet to talk to him at this moment. We are still shocked about what happened. We feel sorry for them and we have no words to say. We are just sorry and wish that they get comfort.”

Nkabinde is charged with three counts of murder and one of attempted murder. His case has been postponed to next week Friday for formal bail application.
