A motorist has drowned while attempting to cross a flooded subway bridge in Brakpan on Gauteng’s East Rand.

It is believed the vehicle he was driving in was overpowered by water following heavy rains yesterday.

City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson Eric Maloka has urged people to be extra cautious on the road, especially during heavy rains.

Maloka says, “We are saying to all our road users that they must approach all low-lying areas with precaution. To our pedestrians, if the water is above your knees please use alternative routes. Please don’t cross, we may end up having the drownings. And to all our road users, especially in the Brakpan side where we have low-lying bridges, most of the bridges are flooded please use alternative routes.”
