The man who murdered a former first lady of South Africa, Marike de Klerk, has been granted parole.
Luyanda Mboniswa will be released from prison on August 30.
Mboniswa served 20 years of his life sentence for the murder. He was also convicted for robbery with aggravating circumstances and housebreaking linked to the murder.
Mbonisa broke into the former First Lady’s beachfront apartment at Dolphin Beach in Tableview in 200, where he was also working as a security guard.
The then 64-year-old, De Klerk was stabbed and throttled. At the time of the murder, the victim was the divorced spouse of the former president.
The Spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services, Singabakho Nxumalo, says Mboniswa will be admitted into the system of community corrections, whereby he is expected to comply with specific set of parole conditions for the rest of his natural life.
Nxumalo says the offender served the minimum required time to be considered for parole.
“He will be assigned a monitoring official to render supervision duties. Some of his parole conditions are such as being restricted to his magisterial district. He is also not allowed to have contact with the family of the victim. What needs to be emphasised, parole placement forms part of the total rehabilitation programme in correcting the offending behaviour and may include continuation of programmes in the system of community corrections,” he adds.
