Mangaung Metro holds special council meeting to elect new mayor

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Mangaung Metro Municipality in Bloemfontein is holding a special council meeting to elect a new mayor and council whip.

The Afrikan Alliance of Social Democrats leader, Pappie Mokoena, became the mayor during a special council meeting two weeks ago. However, the court instructed him to vacate the position, leaving the metro without a mayor yet again.

Residents of Mangaung are crossing their fingers that Tuesday’s special council proceedings will go accordingly.

The African National Congress (ANC) previously challenged the last special council meeting, where some of its expelled members were part of the gathering that elected Mokoena for the mayoral position.

In that meeting, the absence of most ANC councillors was evident.
