Non-profit organisation, the TEARS Foundation, has welcomed the life sentence handed down to the 33-year-old man found guilty of the rape of a 13-year-old girl from Marianhill west of Durban.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) says the perpetrator was a tenant at the girl’s home where he raped her over four years from the age of nine.

TEARS is a support network for survivors of rape and sexual abuse.

The foundation’s Kavya Swaminathan says, “We are really glad for the conviction. I think a lot of times we hear stories, so we are grateful to see the justice system is doing its work and is in play and it is very nice to see a life sentence…”

“I think that being said, we have to remember that this is one case of many that are occurring, that is something that we have to keep in mind,” adds Swaminathan.
